Ganga and Indus are among the top ten rivers in the world that are fast dying as a result of over extraction, climate change, pollution and dams, WWF-India has warned.In a report 'World's Top 10 Rivers at Risk' released on the eve of the World Water Day on March 22, the global conservation organisation listed top ten rivers around the world that were fast drying up.Two of the ten rivers -- Ganga and Indus -- were in the Indian subcontinent, which were severely impacted by over extraction and climate change respectively, the report said.Ganga, which flows from India into Bangladesh, was facing serious threat owing to increased water withdrawals. In India, barrages control all of the tributaries to Ganga and divert roughly 60 per cent of river flow to large scale irrigation, it said. | |

Apparently Bamboo fiber is breathable, wicks moisture better than cotton, is ultra-absorbant and fast-drying. There is a an agent in bamboo fiber called 'bamboo kun' which is said to give cloth natural anti-bacterial deodorant properties. Fabrics that are 100% bamboo have an SPF of approximately 14.
I love all of this and plan to look into buying more bamboo clothing. The bamboo plant reaches maturity in about 3 years and is one of the world's most sustainable plants. It is actually a tropical grass (not a tree) with an extensive root system and grows to heights of 60 feet or more. Some species grow up to 4 feet per day. It can be grown without pesticides.
Bamboo has been used for many things for centuries now, my personal favorite is handmade paper. Now the bamboo pulp can be extruded into fiber for use in yarn and fabric. Oh the possibilites.
